Rent-A-Goalie revolves around the exploits of Cake (Christopher Bolton), a hockey-mad, recovered-from-everything go-to guy, who runs a rag-tag hockey goalie rental service out of Cafe Primo, a family-owned coffee shop in Toronto's Little Italy. Here, at this crazy crossroads of hockey culture, coffee culture and Italian-Canadian culture, Cake has finally found a home. He spends his time juggling friends and enemies, the ridiculous and the profound, while always trying to live by 'The Code' - an ever evolving set of personal ethics, spiritual maxims and athletic credos that keep him on the straight and narrow.
The series is co-written by Christopher Bolton and Creative Producer Graeme Manson, with Bolton, Christopher Szarka, and Nicholas J. Gray serving as executive producers.
Rent-A-Goalie Q & A
Q: What is it?
A: Rent-A-Goalie is a half-hour hockey comedy series that blends the real industry of amateur rental goalies with the world of an Italian coffee shop. It is a love story about a man and his friends, his desire for a new life, and hockey - with guest appearances by hockey legends Phil Esposito, Tony Esposito, Darryl Sittler, Mike Palmateer, Paul Coffey, Bob Probert, Hayley Wickenheiser and Tiger Williams.
Q: What exactly is a 'rent-a-goalie'?
A: The real-life business of renting goalies is based on the indispensability of the goalie to the game of hockey. A game just isn't a game without two goalies. So if you're missing one you can call a 'rent-a-goalie' company and have a professional stranger fill the empty net at your local rink when the team's regular goalie is stuck babysitting, is too hung over to make it, etc. The business is made that much more interesting by the fact that goalies are the certified 'nutters' of the game!
Q: Who is the main character?
A: 'Cake' is a hockey-crazed, recovered-from-everything hopeless romantic who is making a fresh start at Cafe Primo in Toronto's Little Italy, a cultural crossroads of hockey, coffee, machismo, and Italian-Canadian customs. Cake exhibits his self-made, ever evolving personal 'Code' of rules, spiritual maxims and athletic credos while he struggles to rent goaltenders to the teams who need them while balancing their egos and rivalries
